Stirling Stirling is steeped in History. As you approach Stirling you will see the impressive sight of Stirling Castle high above the town. After many years of warfare and the castle was at one point garrisoned by the soldiers of King Edward 1 who occupied Scotland. However the castle was not reclaimed by the Scottish until after the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297 led by William"Braveheart"Wallace and the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 led by Robert the Bruce. The castle is also the home to The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. You can still sense the old town life as you walk around the Old Town of Stirling. For example the Church of the Holy Rude which is the only church in scotland still in use that witnessed the coronation of a Scottish Monarch King James VI in 1567. The Toolbooth can also be seen which served as the legal and administrative centre as well as the local jail. You can visit Argyll`s Lodgings a typical noblemans house , and the Old Town Jail which have both been refurbished in period. The old Stirling Bridge is still seen which is the successor to the old wooden one that played such a vital in William Wallace`s victory over the English occupiers. Visit the distinctive National Wallace Monument nearby to find out more about the history of Stirling and the surrouding area. Built up high on the Abbey Craig it can be seen from far away and you can enjoy a great view from the top. Bannockburn is nearby Stirling where you can visit Bannockburn Heritage Centre. There are exhibitions and an audio visual presentation that explains the story of how Robert the Bruce defeated the largest English army to cross the border. Bridge of Allen is another place worth visiting. This was once a fashionable Spa and still maintains a sophisticated charm with many fine Victorian buildings. Stirling is such a special place and due to its central location offers the ideal holiday base. We also offer Cabin accommodation on the picturesque banks of Loch Awe which you also may find of interest.
